Medicare Insurance Agent in Raleigh, NC

Insurance agent discussing Medicare options with senior couple in office.

If you're getting close to 65 in Raleigh, you've probably noticed the mail. Booklets from carriers you've never heard of, postcards promising to save you money, commercials with a phone number crawling across the bottom of the screen.

It's a lot, and most of it is designed to sell you something.

A local Medicare insurance agent will go through it with you and explain what actually applies to your situation.

Our Raleigh office at Carolina Insurance Professionals has helped people sort out Medicare for more than 25 years, and there's no charge for the help.

Why work with a Raleigh Medicare insurance agency

Medicare itself is federal, but the plans you can actually buy are local. Which plans are for sale, and which doctors fall inside their networks, change from one county to the next. A plan a friend swears by in Greensboro might not be offered in Wake County.

Our office is on Centerview Drive in west Raleigh, so we know the plans sold in this area and the hospital systems they work with. When you call, you'll talk with one of the insurance agents in our Raleigh office, someone who lives and works in the Triangle and sees these plans every week.

Jayson Greene, our president and the broker most Raleigh clients work with, has been doing this since 1999. If you want to see what people think before you call, the office has more than 500 five-star reviews on Google.

What a Raleigh Medicare broker does for you

Most people show up with the same fear: choosing the wrong plan and getting stuck with it. That's where a good broker helps most. We start with your situation, meaning the doctors you'd like to keep, the medications you fill, and the monthly premium you're comfortable with.

From there, we go through how the parts of Medicare fit for you, whether that's Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, a Supplement, or Part D for prescriptions. Before you sign anything, we confirm your doctors take the plan, and your drugs are on its formulary.

That one check prevents most of the problems people run into in their first year. You can compare plans yourself on Medicare's official Plan Finder, though most people would rather go through it with someone who does it every day.

Keeping your Raleigh doctors and hospitals

For a lot of folks, the whole decision comes down to keeping their current doctor. In Raleigh, that means checking the major systems, like WakeMed, UNC REX, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and the wider UNC Health network.

Medicare Advantage plans work through set networks, so a plan that covers your cardiologist at UNC REX may leave out the specialist you see at WakeMed.

We look up each plan's network ahead of time and tell you plainly whether your providers are covered. If keeping a specific doctor is your top priority, we start there and choose the plan that fits.

When it makes sense to call a Medicare agent

There's no wrong time to ask questions, but a few situations really call for a conversation. Turning 65 is the main one, since that opens your seven-month enrollment window.

If you're retiring or coming off an employer's health plan, you'll want Medicare lined up so you don't end up with a gap, which is the same kind of transition we handle for people leaving job coverage early with early retirement health insurance

If you've just moved to the area, a plan from your old state usually won't follow you, so you'll need to see what's sold around Raleigh, and our checklist for moving to North Carolina covers the details.

And if you've had Medicare for years but your plan changed, or your premium jumped, that's reason enough for a fresh look.

Medicare's enrollment windows, in plain English

Medicare has firm deadlines, and missing one can cost you money for years. When you first qualify, you get a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period built around the month you turn 65. If you keep working past 65 and your employer coverage is solid, you may be able to hold off without a late penalty, and we can tell you whether that fits your case.

Once you're enrolled, the Annual Enrollment Period each fall, from October 15 to December 7, is your chance to switch plans for the next year.

You sign up for Parts A and B through Social Security first, then we help you set up the rest of your coverage. If you'd rather get free guidance straight from the state, North Carolina runs a counseling program called SHIIP through its Department of Insurance.

Help that doesn't stop after you enroll

For us, signing up is where the relationship starts. Plans change every year. A drug that's covered in January can drop off the list by the fall, and networks change more often than people expect.

So every autumn we go back through your coverage and check whether it still fits, and we answer the phone the rest of the year when your health or your budget changes. Jayson and the team stay your point of contact for as long as you want the help.

Common Medicare questions from Raleigh residents

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare insurance agent in Raleigh?

No. The insurance company you enroll with pays the agent, so your premium is the same whether you sign up on your own or sit down with us. The help itself is free.

Will my plan cover WakeMed, UNC REX, or Duke Raleigh Hospital?

It depends on the plan. Original Medicare is taken almost everywhere, while Medicare Advantage plans stick to set networks. We check whether your hospital and doctors are covered before you enroll, so you know before you commit.

I'm turning 65. When do I sign up?

Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months, starting three months before the month you turn 65 and ending three months after. If you're still working and covered, you may be able to wait without a penalty. We'll look at your case and tell you which path fits.

Do I have to change plans every year?

You don't have to, though a yearly review is smart. Plans adjust their prices and drug lists every year, so last year's fit isn't always this year's. The check costs you nothing.
