Obamacare Health Insurance & Pre-Existing Conditions – 1

Did you know that over four million non-elderly North Carolina residents have a pre-existing condition and over half a million of them are children? With Obamacare, people with pre-existing conditions are eligible for NC health coverage that could save them a lot of money.

What are pre-existing conditions?

A pre-existing condition is any health problem you had before your first day of health coverage. Each insurance company defines pre-existing conditions differently, but they could include health problems such as cancer, asthma, diabetes, depression, and heart disease. In the past, it has been difficult, if not impossible, for people with pre-existing health conditions in North Carolina to purchase health insurance. With the Affordable Care Act, the laws are changing and we can help.

In North Carolina, life with a pre-existing health condition is about to get a little easier. Under Obamacare, insurance companies will no longer be able to charge more or deny coverage if you have a pre-existing condition.

How will Obamacare be different?

Up until January 1st, 2014, insurance companies in North Carolina can add a permanent elimination rider to your individual insurance policy that states that they will not cover any expenses related to a stated pre-existing condition. Even if you have health insurance as an employment benefit, coverage for a pre-existing condition can be denied for up to 18 months. After January 1st, elimination riders will no longer be legal and health insurance companies will have to cover treatment for pre-existing conditions, without charging extra. This requirement applies for all new health insurance plans, whether it is purchased through the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace or not. We can help you explore your new health insurance options and apply for subsidies in North Carolina.

I already have health insurance. Should I switch?

Even if you already have health insurance, you should investigate other insurance options in North Carolina as the Affordable Care Act goes into effect. We can help you switch to a new plan with no pre-existing condition limitations, saving you time and money.
