The Ins and Out of Health Insurance Special Enrollment Periods in North Carolina

Change is a part of life and if you’ve had a big life change recently, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period to secure health insurance for the year.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is the window of time outside of the annual Health Insurance Open Enrollment period.  This is when North Carolina residents can enroll or change health insurance plans.  If you think you may be a candidate for an SEP but aren’t sure the team at Carolina Insurance Professionals has come with this helpful guide to the Ins and outs of Special Enrollment.

First, the initial step is to figure out if you truly qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.  The easiest way to explain this is to see if you have a Qualifying Life Event. If you have had a qualifying event, you probably have a lot going on so we are here to help!

Some Common Examples of Qualifying Life Events are:

Loss of current health coverage:

Examples include losing employer coverage, student health plan coverage, Medicare, Medicaid or CHIP. Another common example of a qualifying life event is turning 26 and losing your health insurance coverage through a parent’s plan or COBRA exhausting. Confused about whether your situation falls into this category—give us a call!

Residence Changes:

If you’ve had a residence change in the last 60 days, you may qualify for this Special Enrollment period. A local agent can help determine whether your move qualifies for this special enrollment time. It is important to note that you must have had health insurance coverage within the last 60 days when this move took place.

Household Changes:

Changes in your household situation like getting married, having a baby, getting divorced or death of a policy holder are events that could qualify you for a SEP. All of these events can take up an enormous amount of your time.  We are here to help make the securing health insurance a simple one for you.
